Tortilla wraps are very flexible and easy to customize. You can fill them with many different ingredients, so they are great for lunches, snacks, dinners, or even breakfast.
These Ground Beef Tortilla Wraps are one of my favorite meals to make at home. They are filled with flavorful taco-style beef, fresh vegetables, and a creamy homemade nacho cheese sauce. The wraps are folded in a special way with a smaller tortilla placed on top of the filling, which helps hold everything together.
Once folded, the wraps are cooked in a skillet until the tortillas become golden brown and slightly crispy. Inside, you get juicy seasoned beef, melted cheese sauce, crunchy lettuce, fresh tomatoes, and shredded cheddar cheese. The result is a filling and delicious wrap the whole family can enjoy.
If you like, you can also try making homemade tortillas to make this meal even more special.
Ingredients
For the Wraps
- 20 flour tortillas (10 large tortillas about 8-inch diameter and 10 small tortillas about 4-inch diameter)
- 1½ pound ground beef
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 3 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- Avocado oil (for cooking in skillet)
Filling
- 3 cups romaine lettuce or iceberg lettuce, shredded
- 2 cups tomatoes, chopped
- 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
Sauce
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the raw ground beef with baking soda. Let it sit for 10 minutes to make the meat more tender. After that, add chili powder, cumin, salt, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef (no oil needed because the beef has its own fat). Break the meat apart with a spatula and cook until it becomes brown.
- While the beef cooks, shred the lettuce and chop the tomatoes.
- To make the nacho cheese sauce, melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add flour and whisk continuously to make a smooth paste (roux). Cook it for about 2 minutes.
- Slowly pour in the milk while whisking so the sauce stays smooth. Turn off the heat and add the shredded cheddar cheese. Stir well until the cheese melts. Add salt to taste. If the sauce is too thick, mix in a little more milk. If it cools and thickens too much, gently warm it again on low heat.
- To assemble the wraps, place 3–4 tablespoons of cooked ground beef in the center of a large tortilla, leaving space around the edges.
- Add some nacho cheese sauce on top of the beef. Then add shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and shredded cheddar cheese.
- Place a small tortilla on top of the filling in the center.
- Fold the edges of the large tortilla toward the center, making small pleats so the wrap stays closed.
- Heat a little avocado oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully place the wraps seam-side down in the skillet. Cook until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side.
- Serve the wraps warm. You can enjoy them with sour cream or hot sauce if you like.
Tips & Tricks
- Store leftover wraps in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat them in a lightly oiled pan over low heat until warm.
- If packing for school or work lunches, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or foil to keep them fresh.
